In the late 20s of this century the company "Western Electric" in cooperation with the Committee on the working conditions in the industry at the National Research Council conducted a series of surveys at its plant in Hawthorne, near Chicago. The purpose of these experiments was to investigate the relationship between certain parameters of the working conditions and the level of his performance. Results of the experiments were quite unexpected, and in 1924 were recruited to the team at Harvard Business School, among who was F. Rotlisberger. From 1927 to 1932, this work led by E. Mayo. Using sociometric techniques, he and his colleagues conducted a series of experimental studies of conditions and productivity, which revealed the importance of social and mental components (including informal interpersonal relationships) as the determining factors of production activities. These surveys, which became a turning point in the development of concepts of Western sociology of organized human behavior called Hawthorne experiments.

In describing the department of electrical cables in the West Electric plant in Hawthorne, J. Homans highlighted the following conclusions: 1) if the frequency of interaction between two or more persons increases, then amplified and the degree of their mutual affection for each other, and vice versa, and 2) persons which increases the mutual sympathy and express these feelings by increasing the activity of their actions, and vice versa, and 3) more often than people interact with each other, the greater the similarity is in their actions and feelings, and vice versa, and 4) the higher the rank of the individual n group, the more his actions are consistent with the norms of the group, and vice versa, and 5) the higher the social rank of the person, the wider the range of interactions. Conceptual understanding of experimental results, initiating the theory of "human relations", was carried out by E. Mayo active participation of F. Rotlisberger, president of the consultations, "New Jersey Bell Telephone," Charles Barnard and assistance of sociologists.
